Learn how to Install your Facebook Pixel to track your Facebook advertising performance.

Updated over 7 months ago

A Facebook pixel is a tool used with the Meta Ads Manager used to track the statistics of your website and to help better manage your Facebook advertisement performance.

Prerequisites

Assuming you have a Meta advertising account setup.

There are two things you need to do for a successful Pixel installation and test.

For assistance with creating your Facebook pixel, this Facebook help article has step-by-step instructions to walk through the process from start to finish.

Pixel Setup Instructions

Step 1: Login to Events Manager

While logged into your Facebook account, click on your profile photo at the top right of the homepage and select Meta Business Manager from the dropdown.

From the sidebar at the left, select All Tools, then Events Manager.

Be sure that you have the correct account selected within the Events Manager using the dropdown at the top right. The Facebook pixel can only be set up on a Business account, and you will not be able to create any new datasets if you have the Ad Account selected. You can click on the 'See more ad accounts' button to switch to a Business account.

If you do not already have a Facebook Business account set up, you may only see your Ad account and will need to create one for Business.

If you are having difficulties setting up a new Business account, ensure that the Facebook account you're using has had at least a few weeks' worth of activity (creating posts, liking or commenting on other posts, adding photos, ect). This is because Facebook may attempt to restrict Business account creation on a newly created Facebook profile to make sure the user is human.

Once you have switched over to a Business page, the next screen that appears should be an overview of any current pixels or assets associated with your business account.

Step 2: Create Your Pixel

On the sidebar at the far left of the Events Manager, select the green Connect Data Sources button to create a new dataset. Select 'Web', and enter your desired name for the pixel.

Enter your BoldTrail website URL and click Check. Once the connection check is complete, click Next.

Choose "do it yourself" when asked to find a setup method.

On the next screen, select "Meta pixel only".

Select 'Install code manually'.

Copy the base pixel code to your clipboard, and complete your preferences for your pixel within the Events Manager. We'll use the copied code in the next steps!

Step 3: Add Your Pixel to BoldTrail

Now, go to your Web & IDX settings in BoldTrail, and scroll down to the 'Custom Header' section of your website settings. Paste your pixel there.

  1. Click on 'Web & IDX' on the left.

  2. Select 'Edit Settings'.

  3. Find 'Custom Header' and paste your pixel.

You have part one of your pixel installed. This part tells Facebook every time someone visits your website, in a stat called 'PageView.' A PageView is tallied each time someone opens your BoldTrail website. So, now we can test that.

Step 4: Test Your Pixel Part 1.

Open your Boldtrail website in a new tab.

(If you click on your main menu at the upper right, you can click on your BoldTrail URL to open it.)

Now, when viewing your site, you should see your pixel extension light up with a green indicator!

If you do not see the green indicator

There are a couple of reasons you may not see the green indicator. First, make sure you disabled any adblockers on your BoldTrail URL as mentioned at the top of this guide.

Secondly, it's possible that although you saved your pixel in website settings, the site may not yet be updated. Try holding down Ctrl+Shft+r to refresh the website. If this still doesn't work, your website may in fact be cached, and you'll need to wait till later to double-check it, or restart Chrome.

In lieu of restarting, I would first continue on past this testing step and proceed with the rest of the installation guide. You can then restart your Chrome browser after installing the second part of the pixel to test.

Clicking on the Pixel Extension, we can see that the 'PageView' was detected appropriately.

Step 5: Copy & Paste Code, Part Deux.

Navigate back to your Pixel tab in Facebook, to continue.

Click on the continue button at the bottom of the setup popup.

At this stage, you are presented with information about Facebook Events. Now, the standard pixel we installed tracks page views. The event code tracks when something happens, and reports that as well.

For our purposes, and especially for Advertising purposes, we want to tell Facebook whenever we successfully generate a lead. This requires an event code, that has to be installed in a special place.

In the BoldTrail website settings, you will find the 'Conversion Code' box further down the page underneath the 'Custom Header' box. This code will 'fire' or activate whenever a new lead is generated.

At this point, the customization options within the Facebook platform are immense. But, to get you started, you can use the pre-defined event 'Generate Lead.'

fbq('track','Lead');

This pre-built script is automatically going to tally up 'Lead' numbers as new leads sign up on your BoldTrail site.

Go back to website settings, and paste your code into the Facebook pixel underneath (fbq('track', 'PageView');).

Don't forget to click 'Save!'

Step 6: Test Your Pixel, Part 2.

Open your Boldrail website in a new tab again. Make sure that it says 'Login' at the top left of your site.

Play around on your site, browsing listings, until you get the registration popup as a New Lead would.

Enter an email address and a phone number to create a test lead.

After successfully registering, you'll see your pixel helper update with a new green number.

Not only has it recorded a page view, but it also recorded a new lead registration.

If you are seeing this, your basic FB pixel is set up!

If you are not experiencing this, but have followed all of the instructions, and installed both codes, close your chrome browser and re-open it. Your pixel code might not yet have been published to your BoldTrail site after saving it.

Pixel Data

Going forward, in your Facebook Ads Manager, you can access your Pixel reports by navigating back to the Events Manager.

This will show you all of your pixels, and a summary.
